French Open Tennis Tournament 2008 : Nadal and Ivanovic Emerge Champions

Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated world No. 1 Roger Federer 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 and won his fourth straight French Open Title in Paris on June 8, 2008.The Spaniard was at his best when he demolished Federer in one hour and 48 minutes in Men’s Singles (final). With this win, he also equalled legendaryBjorn Borg’s feat of four consequentive titles at Roland Garros. It was the shortest French Open men’s final in terms of games played since1977 and the quickest final at 108 minutes since 1980.

In Men’s Doubles Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay) and Lius Herna (Peru) beat Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) 6-2, 6-3.



In Women’s Singles, Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic won Roland Garros on June 7, 2008 in Paris. It was her first Grand Slam title. She defeatedRussia’s 13th seeded tennis player Dinara Safin 6-4, 6-3. It was the third time when Ana, after she had lost both her previous major finals toJustine Henin 12 months ago and to Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open in Janauary 2008. With this, she has been crowned with world No. 1position.

Tenth seeded, all Spanish team Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual competed with unseeded Australian CaseyDellacquia and Italian Francesca Shiavone for the Women’s doubles title. In Mixed Doubles Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and Bob Bryan(U. S. A.) defeated Katarina Srebotnik (Slovenia) and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 7-6 (4).
About French Open : Officially named in French the Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros or Tournoi de Roland Garros (TheFrench Internationals of Roland Garros) the tournament is often referred to as the French Open. It is a major tennis tournament. It is heldbetween mid May and early June in Paris, France at the State Roland Garros. It began as a national tournament in 1891. Since 2006 the tournament has begun on a Sundayfeaturing 12 singles matches played on the three courts.
